Ngai Tuhoe vs Attorney General and Police: Call out for submissions

There are two on-going investigations happening with regard to the conduct of the police during the raids on 15 October 2007. Ngai Tuhoe is asking for participation from people or groups who were affected in these raids. Details of both the Independent Police Complaints Authority hearing and the case being taken by Ngai Tuhoe against the Attorney General and Police are listed below.

1. Independent Police Complaints Authority

From 25 March — 28 March 08, Justice Goddard & investigators would like to hear from people affected by the Oct 15 raids. She will be conducting
an open forum at Tauarau Marae 25 March, from 10am. Independent Police Complaints Authority (IPCA) Role: Investigate and resolve complaints concerning misconduct or neglect of duty by the Police.
Convenor: Justice Goddard.

Eligibility:If you feel that you, your whanau, hapu, Iwi, organisation or other group have been affected we welcome and encourage your participation at the wananga.

Cost: None.
Outcome: Findings that affirm the Tuhoe view of the unjustified Policing actions.

2. Preparation has now begun on developing submissions for the Tuhoe Civil action against the NZ Police. If you are interested in becoming an applicant please contact the Te Kotahi a Tuhoe office who will arrange an interview with the legal team.

Purpose: Police to account for unlawful and unjustified treatment of Tuhoe people during Oct 15 raids.
Lawyer: Peter Williams QC.

Eligibility:If you were arrested, stopped, photographed, held at gunpoint and detained in homes.

Cost: Details available from Te Kotahi a Tuhoe (TKAT) office.

Outcome: Apology and financial compensation via damages.
Time: Est 5 days over the coming year.
